A 39-YEAR-OLD man from Inyathi in Matabeleland North province has been slapped with an effective 17-year jail sentence for raping his employer’s 11-year-old daughter on three different occasions.
He appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate, Sibonginkosi Mnkandla facing a charge of rape.
He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty after trial and convicted.
He was sentenced to 20 years and three years of his sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The court heard that on 17 February at around 5pm, the victim and her mother arrived home from church. The juvenile’s mother then went out to a nearby village to fetch water, leaving the minor behind.
The accused approached the juvenile and ordered her to undress but she declined. The culprit followed her and grabbed her hand, undressed the victim and ordered her to lie down and raped her.
The juvenile’s mother caught him in the act and enquired from them about what was happening but they were both silent.
He stood up, zipped his trousers and went away. The next day, the victim’s mother went to her mother-in-law’s house and narrated the ordeal to her.
The victim was interrogated and she disclosed that the culprit had abused her on three different occasions.
The matter was reported to the police and investigations were carried out, leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.
The victim was taken to hospital for medical examination and a medical affidavit was produced in court as evidence.
