Preparations for the Heroes Day commemorations are on course, with Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Dr Gerald Gwinji expected to lead a team to assess the National Heroes Acre tomorrow where the main event will be held, spokesperson for the ministry Mr Philemon Chiripanyanga has said.
The Heroes Day commemorations will be held next Monday under the theme: “Remembering our Heroes — Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo.”
The Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day will then be held on the following day held under the theme: “Brick by Brick, Stone Upon Stone — Zimbabwe Defence Forces: Creating a conducive environment for the attainment of Vision 2030.”
Said Mr Chiripanyanga: “Preparations of the Heroes Day Celebrations have gathered momentum as we approach the day. So far, a number of inter-ministerial meetings have been held in preparation for the event.
“Since the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage is the lead Ministry for this event, letters to invite families of the fallen heroes have been distributed. Our liaison officers who will be responsible for the welfare of the widows and widowers have already been trained and ready for deployment.”
Mr Chiripanyanga said the Harare team was trained last Friday, while training for the Bulawayo team was yesterday.
“So far, it’s all systems go with the final assessment of the national shrine expected to be done on Saturday at 10 am,” he said. “The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Dr Gwinji, will lead the assessment team.”
Mr Chiripanyanga said preparations for commemorations in all provinces and districts were also going on well.
Meanwhile, the ZDF Community Assistance Week was on Tuesday launched by Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, with various projects already being handed over to communities.
ZDF celebrations are preceded by a Community Assistance Week programme, which is primarily anchored on handing over completed corporate social responsibility programmes such as clinics and classroom blocks, among others.
