Preparations for this year’s celebrations of Heroes Day and Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day next month have begun, with the central ceremony for both events set to be held in Harare although provincial capitals will be staging events.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Mr Philemon Chiripanyanga, whose ministry is responsible for State occasions, confirmed yesterday that preparatory meetings have already started.
Heroes Day will be held on August 14 at the National Heroes Acre, with the ZDF Day to be held at the National Sports Stadium the following day.
“Internal and inter-ministerial meetings to prepare for the commemorations have already started while liaison officers who will assist families of the heroes when they come for the events will be trained in Harare and Bulawayo next week.
“The invitation letters for the families are also now in place and will be dispatched following the training of the officers,” he said.
The Heroes Day is an annual event set aside to celebrate the sacrifices made by gallant sons and daughters of the soil, both living and departed, to liberate the country from British colonial rule.The ZDF Day is meant to acknowledge the role played by the ZDF in protecting the country’s territorial integrity and ensure peace and security, which are essential ingredients for national development.
As is the norm, the ZDF will carry out community development during the Defence Forces Week, which is held before the national event.
The projects include construction of community infrastructure like schools, bridges and clinics while the ZDF’s medical personnel also offer free services during the week.
