The Harvest House International (HHI) Bulawayo City Hub 1 choir clinched the top spot at the Clash of Hub Choirs competition held recently at the Harvest House International Conference Centre (HHICC).
The event saw the choir competing against over 20 groups from various HHI branches.
Under the discerning eyes of esteemed judges Lindelani Mkhize of Joyous Celebration, Benjamin Dube, and Michael Mahendere, HHI Bulawayo City Hub 1 choir stood out, securing the coveted first place. Following closely were HHI Global Q and HHI Gweru, claiming second and third places, respectively.
Bhekusiko Bhebhe, the leader of the victorious choir, expressed immense joy and gratitude for their achievement. He said they felt honoured to minister alongside other choirs within the church.
“It was a humbling experience, where we got to learn, unlearn, and relearn a lot of things as musicians. The Clash of Choirs competition is a platform where you get to grow and develop as a musician, and are stretched to raise the standard of gospel music within the church,” shared Bhebhe.
The emotional victory ceremony left the team in awe, with Bhebhe stating, “It felt unreal, it felt like it was a dream honestly. All my team members cried on the day because it meant a lot to them. Seeing the fruits of our labour as a team was emotional.”
Bhebhe attributed their success to hard work, prayer, teamwork, and humility.
Reflecting on their rigorous practice routine, including daily rehearsals and half-night sessions from 8pm to midnight, Bhebhe acknowledged the dedication that fuelled their triumph. He also stressed the importance of prayer in ensuring the depth and sincerity of their ministry.
“The choir’s commitment to innovation, creativity, and leaving a profound mark of faith on stage set us apart. We pushed ourselves to become creative and innovative right from our choreography, vocals and the band.
“Our goal was to leave the mark of Jesus Christ on stage and that’s what set us apart because our eyes were set on Him,” he said.
This victory marks the choir’s second win, with their previous success in 2015. Despite facing challenges such as illness among choir members, they overcame them with resilience and divine grace.Looking forward, Bhebhe shared ambitious plans for the choir, including a group single release next year and a live DVD recording at the end of 2024. Their goal is to produce skilled gospel musicians who will carry the message of Jesus through their music.
The Clash of Hub Choirs competition, orchestrated by HHI founders Bishop Dr Collin Nyathi and Snr Reverend Dr Sarah Nyathi, stands as a testament to the dedication and musical prowess of Harvest House International choirs nationwide. – @TashaMutsiba.
