HIGHLANDERS coach Benjani Mwaruwari is hoping his team can build on their midweek breakthrough when they come up against CAPS United in what promises to be a potentially tricky Castle Lager Premier Soccer League encounter on Sunday.

The match will be staged at Barbourfields Stadium, a venue that carries both history and expectation for the Bulawayo giants.

CAPS United arrive at the fixture sitting comfortably at the top of the log with 19 points from eight matches, while Highlanders find themselves in 10th place with 10 points, a reflection of a season that has slowly begun to find direction.

Bosso finally got their campaign up and running in emphatic fashion on Wednesday, recording a convincing 3–1 victory over Chicken Inn FC. It was a result that not only marked their first win of the season, but also delivered Mwaruwari his maiden triumph since taking over the reins.

The timing of that victory could hardly have been better. Highlanders had endured a frustrating start to the season, one defined by a series of draws that told two very different stories. While those results highlighted the team’s defensive organisation and resilience, they also exposed a lack of sharpness and decision making in the final third — a shortcoming that had begun to draw criticism from both supporters and football analysts.

As a result, Mwaruwari, a former Warriors captain, found himself under increasing scrutiny, with questions being asked about his tactical approach and whether he possessed the pedigree to lead one of Zimbabwe’s most demanding and emotionally charged football institutions. The emphatic win over Chicken Inn has, at least for now, eased that pressure and restored a sense of calm around the Bosso camp.

Even so, the Highlanders coach remains cautious, fully aware that Sunday’s assignment against an in form CAPS United side represents a far sterner test and a true measure of his team’s progress.

“It’s a marathon, and we have to keep the momentum. We must not get carried away by the win, though. I think it was due for us to get that win. We don’t have to take this win and think we are up there; we have to work and respect every opponent that we face.

“There are a lot of areas we have to work on. CAPS United are playing well, they are leading, and it is going to be a difficult game. CAPS is a good team and we need to work hard to get the win.”

The timing of the fixture adds another layer of intrigue. For Highlanders, it is a chance to demonstrate that their performance against Chicken Inn was not an isolated moment, but rather evidence of steady progress under Mwaruwari’s stewardship. A positive result against CAPS United would go a long way in restoring belief among the Bosso faithful and reinforcing confidence in the coach’s long term project.

From a tactical perspective, Highlanders showed encouraging signs in midweek, particularly in their attacking transitions. The ball was moved with greater urgency and intent, and players appeared more willing to commit bodies forward. If that intensity can be matched with the same defensive discipline, Bosso could ask serious questions of CAPS United.

However, CAPS United make the trip to Bulawayo as one of the stand out teams of the season so far. The Harare giants have combined defensive solidity with clinical efficiency in front of goal, displaying an ability to control matches and strike decisively at key moments. That balance has been central to their impressive start.

For CAPS United, Sunday’s clash presents an opportunity to further underline their title credentials against one of their traditional rivals on a notoriously demanding away ground. A positive result would not only preserve their momentum at the summit of the table, but also send a clear message to the rest of the league.

Meetings between Highlanders and CAPS United are rarely straightforward affairs. Historically, the encounters have been tightly contested, often decided by fine margins and moments of inspiration or error. The fixture carries emotional weight, fuelled by the stature of both clubs and the passion of their respective support bases.

With Highlanders buoyed by renewed confidence and CAPS United riding a wave of form, Sunday’s showdown is delicately poised. The outcome is likely to hinge on which side manages the pressure better and executes its game plan with greater discipline.

For Mwaruwari and his players, it is another opportunity to turn promise into consistency. For CAPS United, it is a chance to tighten their grip on top spot.

Either way, supporters can expect a high intensity contest as two of Zimbabwean football’s heavyweights collide in what stands out as one of the weekend’s most compelling fixtures.
