MEN have their clubs and the sports channels. Women have each other. So when the men are off to spend the weekends watching the English Premier League with mates at the bar and other activities with companions best unmentioned, women seek the wisdom of each other’s company.
The Vigilant Lady Club launched by fashion and beauty industry icon Kiki Divaris in October is a gathering of women who seek to spend their weekends sharing how to improve themselves through skills building and exposure to consumer goods and services.
Last Saturday the women met at Chivendera Villa in Parktown, Waterfalls, for their inaugural tea to watch a fashion parade, hear about various products for women, have lunch and share experiences.
Co-founder of Vigiladies Charity Bandason says that the club was formed to give women some me-time with a difference. The pick-me-up effect of being told that you can is as good as retail therapy, in fact, better because you do not have the guilty I-shouldn’t-have feeling.
“Just meeting up with others who are making strides to the top makes many women feel inspired. In addition, we give everyone a chance to showcase what they can do which provides a great networking platform.
“We also learn about some things that we would never otherwise know. Today there was talk on insurance cover which is something that many women would not consider to be an important aspect of their investment portfolio and safety net for when life deals you some bad cards,” Bandason said.
The fashion show by local designers left the ladies who attended the tea convinced that there is room in their wardrobes and wallets for designer clothes. The next gathering is a charity auction slotted for December 6. Women will get a chance to offload stuff they no longer need and maybe acquire something that they have always wished to have.
As mothers and caregivers, women seem to find it hard to enjoy life without thinking of the less fortunate. So Vigiladies came up with a plan to take care of the needy at the same time. Each person selling off items is requested to donate one lot to charity and proceeds from those sales will be given to Arcadia Baptist Orphanage Pre-school and Chiedza Children’s Home.
To keep the tone of the event classy high tea will be served.
High tea is a traditional English tradition where afternoon tea is served with an array of delicacies including sweet pastries, delicate sandwiches and cake. The tea developed as a focal point for afternoon visits between ladies of high society. It was there that they exchanged notes on various issues, gossiped and kept abreast with fashion trends. They also talked about how to get the best out of life.
