High turnout as rugby festival starts

THE Dairibord Schools Rugby Festival kicked-off at Prince Edward yesterday with a rather surprising high turn-out of fans. By mid-day Vainona girls had stolen the show having registered the biggest win of the morning. Vainona girls thrashed George Stark 72-0 after turning on the show in the second half. By half-time they were leading 31-0 and their thrashing of George Stark featured five tries and three conversions. Despite the number of teams taking part in the week-long event being reduced for this year’s edition there was a higher spectator turn-out on the opening days compared to the previous years

Oriel Boys got the festival going with a 19-0 win over Lord Malvern at the Jubilee Field which is traditionally used for First XV games.
The first drawn match of the festival was registered when Nyanga-based Marist Boys came from behind to level matters against Herentals College of Harare in the second game.

But before the games kicked off, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, through the referees’ society, took time to educate team managers on the importance of discipline, not only in the game, but during the entire festival.

Top official Mudiwa Mundawarara said they were worried by some of the incidents of indiscipline that took place at the festival, especially last year. “And that is why we approached the ZRU because discipline is an important aspect of the game,” said Mundawarara. “Over the years there were some elements of discipline that were lacking and I am sure if we go on with such type of awareness campaigns we will have better all-round rugby players.”
