There was high voter turnout in Chiredzi district for yesterday ‘s harmonised elections especially in Chiredzi North constituency where hundreds of people had queued at various polling stations before polling officially started at 7am.
A long queue was seen at Takunda Primary School B way before opening of polling stations and by early evening over 109 000 people had cast their ballots in Chiredzi North, East, South, Central and West constituencies.
Voting was conducted peacefully across Chiredzi where long queues characterised polling stations in the morning before the numbers started going down late afternoon.
Voters continued showing up in trickles until the closure of polling stations. By 7pm, 209 polling stations out of 249 across the district had confirmed end of voting flawlessly with the remaining stations tying up some loose ends.
When voting started there were also long queues at Dunusa Primary C polling station in Chiredzi West, Shingai Primary School A in Chiredzi Central and Nandi Primary School in Chiredzi East. Takunda Primary School B presiding officer Mrs Precede Munyanyi said they coped well with the high number of voters.
Chiredzi district elections officer Mrs Hendrina Mukuvare said voting ended peacefully across the district.
“By 6pm we had 51 103 males and 58 778 females who had voted across Chiredzi bringing the total to 109 881 people who had voted.
“We also had 1 487 people who were turned away for various reasons ranging from defaced IDs, bringing photocopied IDs and not appearing on the voter’s roll among other issues,” said Mrs Mukuvare.
