Highfield Evangelical Lutheran Church won the Martin Luther Deanery Musical competition that was held last weekend at Churchill Boys High School. At least six choirs from Kadoma, Mufakose, Highfield, Mabelreign and University of Zimbabwe took part in the competition. University of Zimbabwe came second in the tightly-contested competition. In an interview, Martin Luther Deanery head, Dean Chiropafadzo Moyo who congratulated Highfield for scooping the first prize, said she was happy with the success of the musical competition which she says aims at promoting evangelism and fellowship in their church.
“We would like to congratulate Highfield for winning again this year. They won the competition last year and they have managed to retain the position, we are happy for them,” she said.
“However, the main aim of this competition is not for choirs to compete. It aims at bringing our choirs from different assemblies together for a purpose of evangelising, worshipping and preaching the word of God through music.”
She added that the gathering was also a source of revival in the church.
“As choirs from different assemblies gathered, people have been revived spiritually through music as they sing and dance,” she said.
For participating in the competition, all the choirs walked away with monetary prizes which Moyo said were meant to promote infrastructural development at their respective churches.
“The money that they won is meant for the choirs to start infrastructural development at their churches. Our deanery also includes Gokwe which did not have a church building and people are actually fellowshipping under the trees sitting on stones, so we are building there.
“One of our churches in Gokwe is now at roof level and we will start building another one as soon as we roof the first one,” she said.
Moyo said they are looking forward to have all choirs from their deanery taking part in the competition next year.
