Highlanders benefactors to rescue . . . take up Harrison salary and upkeep

HIGHLANDERS benefactors that took care of former coach Hendrik Pieter de Jongh’s salary and upkeep have extended the same benevolence to new coach Mark Harrison, B-Metro Sport has learnt.

Harrison, the Briton with vast experience in coaching local clubs, took over from de Jongh who left Bosso in a huff to join reigning Premier Soccer League champions FC Platinum.

“As you are aware, we have a few benefactors based overseas who came together and pledged to pay the salary of former coach de Jongh when he joined the club in September last year.

“The benefactors, who want to remain anonymous, paid de Jongh’s salary religiously during his stay here and they have also extended the same offer to pay the salary of our new coach Mark Harrison,” said club chairman Kenneth Mhlophe.

Mhlophe said the coming on board of the overseas-based benefactors had lessened a huge financial burden on the club.

“We can now concentrate on other pressing issues without having to worry about paying the coach and we are grateful to the benefactors for assisting the club,” he said.

Harrison will use the club vehicle that was acquired by the South African Supporters Chapter and will reside at an upmarket apartment.

The Briton has a daunting task of assembling a competitive team that will fight against some expensively assembled teams such as FC Platinum, Caps United, Ngezi Platinum and Dynamos.

Bosso are said to be on the verge of signing old horses Obadiah Tarumbwa, Mkhokheli Dube and former Kaizer Chiefs player Mitchelle Katsvairo.

Compared to their perennial nemesis Caps United and Dynamos that have been buying players every other day, Highlanders have been relatively quiet on the transfer market.
