HAVING come close to breaking Highlanders’ 18-year-old league title jinx during his first term of office, chairman Johnfat Sibanda is set to seek re-election and lead another charge for the elusive trophy.
Bosso looked primed to end their league title drought last season before a disappointing second half of the season saw them surrender the title to Ngezi Platinum.
As a result, Sibanda feels his mission will be incomplete without delivering the league title to the Bosso family.
“The quest to win the league is one of the things that has spurred me to seek re-election. We could have won it last year but we did not. What l got from the players is that maybe they relaxed in the second part of the season. However, winning the league is achievable. We have brought in a new coach and we will beef up the squad gun for the championship. I would have achieved nothing without winning the league,” said Sibanda.
The Bosso elections are set for February 4. The elections are for a chairman, secretary, and committee member.
The three positions are held by Sibanda, Morgan Dube and Mgcini Mafu, respectively.
For the chairmanship, Sibanda will contest against former banker Eddison Dube, former chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, as well as South Africa-based member and benefactor Nodumo Nyathi.
Dube, Mhlophe and Nyathi have declared their candidature.
Sibanda said the elections should unite the club rather than create divisions.
“My message is that we have to be united during this time. We are all doing this for Highlanders and Highlanders should be the winner at the end of the day,” said Sibanda.
He went on to share some of the achievements in his first tenure.
“There are a lot of things that we covered in my first tenure. The clubhouse is there and it is a state of an art facility as l had promised. It has become the go-to area for anyone who comes to Bulawayo. At the grounds, we have put another borehole so that we have sufficient water for our grounds.
“We intend to have Bosso 90 playing at the clubhouse grounds because the ground is now ready for use. We managed to revive the Highlanders Royals picked them without a team and they became champions. Let me not forget to thank the whole Highlanders family for their support. The success of Highlanders is through teamwork. With Royals we also have to thank Sobukhazi High and the coach who started as a volunteer until we employed him,” said Sibanda. – @innocentskizoe.
