Highlanders yet to drop points

From their opening two matches, the Bulawayo giants who are fourth on the log with six points have been lethal as they have scored nine goals and conceded three.

In their opening game of the season they beat Blue Rangers 4-0 before beating Hardbody 5-3 in a tightly contested encounter.

Highlanders trail Shabanie Mine, Chicken Inn and Monomotapa who have seven points from three outings.

Bosso’s pending game is against FC Platinum and the match is likely to be played on Wednesday next week at Mandava Stadium.

At the weekend Highlanders got their goals from double scorer Graham Ncube, Simon Munawa, Heritein Masuku and Masimba Mambare.

Masuku and Mambare missed the season’s opening match against Blue Rangers but acquitted themselves well in the Hardbody match where they came from the bench.

Highlanders coach Kelvin Kaindu said despite an avalanche of goals, he was not happy with his team’s defence.

“It’s important we got the three points but we conceded easy goals. I am not happy with the way we defended. We are good when going forward that’s why we scored those goals but our defending was poor.

“We won but we still have lots of work to do,” said the Zambian expatriate.

The result saw Bosso add onto Hardbody’s misery, as they are yet to pick a point after three outings. They are second from the bottom.

Tavaka Gumbo, the Hardbody gaffer, remained confident that they would get a positive result against Hwange.

“My team is shaping up and this was a nice game  and the boys played well despite the fact that we lost. We managed to come back twice which shows that we are getting there considering the time we took assembling our squad.

“Things look promising and we cannot afford to fail to get something in our next game if we maintain this fighting spirit,” Gumbo said.

Some of the players to watch at Hardbody include playmaker Richard Jongwe, former Hwange player Andrew Chuma and striker Aleck Marime who scored one of the goals and made an assist for another.

Their goalkeeper Tapiwa Marime despite conceding five goals showed some flashes of brilliance and there was little he could have done to stop Highlanders’ goals.

In the Bulawayo derby between Chicken Inn and Quelaton, Chicken Inn won 2-0 courtesy of strikes from Tendai Ndoro and Danny Phiri.

The win saw the fast-food outlets sponsored club confining newboys Quelaton to the murky relegation waters.
It was Adam Ndlovu’s second win of the season following the 2-0 drubbing of Caps United in Harare a fortnight ago.

The victory also led to Quelaton directors calling for an emergency meeting last night with their coach Thulani “Thuts” Sibanda to discuss his future.

Ndlovu who took over from Philani “Beefy” Ncube at Chicken Inn is tied on seven points with Shabanie Mine who have a superior goal difference and third- placed Monomotapa.

“We take each game as it comes and I am happy that the boys played well. We are going to continue working hard and it’s still early to talk about the championship. We just take each game as it comes,” said the former Warriors striker.

While Hardbody and Quelaton found the going tough, newboys Buffaloes and Harare City managed to get maximum points at the weekend as they won by identical 1-0 scorelines.

Harare City beat Gunners at home while Buffaloes salvaged maximum points at Morris Depot against Black Mambas.

Monomotapa’s skipper Tawanda Nyamandwe scored a priceless goal as his side handed defending champions Dynamos their first defeat of the season.

FC Platinum held Hwange to a one-all draw while Shabanie Mine beat Blue Rangers 2-1.

Motor Action are set to lose points over the disorder that led to their clash against Caps United failing to take place.
The Green Machine will be awarded three points on a 3-0 scoreline.

The weekend fiasco saw Motors Action wanting to use their stadium for the high profile game which would have attracted at least 4 000 supporters.
