Hillside Teachers’ College is introducing new practical subjects in 2023 to expand its curriculum.

It is introducing building technology design, clothing and textile technology design, food technology and computer science among other subjects.

Speaking at the institution’s 64th graduation ceremony last week, the principal, Mrs Linda Sibindi said syllabi for the intended programmes have already been designed and are awaiting approval by the Centre for Teacher Education and Materials Development.

She said a diploma in pedagogics for candidates who already have qualifications in Agriculture and other relevant HEXCO courses is also being introduced.

The principal said in 2021 Hillside Teachers’ College successfully introduced and enrolled students to train as teachers for indigenous languages in line with the national vision of promoting the languages.

“The college successfully introduced and enrolled students to train as teachers for SeSotho, TjiKalanga, TshiVenda and ChiTonga in 2021,” she said.

Mrs Sibindi said the college has two intakes of these and she is encouraging others to join and applications for the 2023 intake are still ongoing for all subjects.

She said students who graduated this year were able to fit into the new way of doing things.

“Yours is the first generation in many decades that can take such individual and collective pride in your achievements in the face of diversity,” said Mrs Sibindi.

The college, she said, has taken a bold move in sporting activities and is excelling.

“They participated in Zimbabwe Teachers’ Colleges Sports Associations (ZITCOSA) and Zimbabwe Tertiary Sports Union (ZTISU) games and in the 2022 ZITCOSA games, three teams: basketball, volleyball ladies and men’s as well as netball teams participated and won gold medals,” said Mrs Sibindi.

She said at the ZITSU games, the ladies’ basketball team won a bronze medal and they got a student who was selected into the ZITISU team that proceeded for further games held in Malawi in August 2022. – @NomqheleC
