A MAN lost his life in a horror road accident along 12th Avenue Extension in Bulawayo after being struck by two vehicles in succession on Sunday night.

Police confirmed that the unknown pedestrian, described as dark in complexion and wearing black jeans, a red T-shirt and grey slippers, died instantly after the brutal double impact.

“Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident which occurred along 12 Avenue Extension at Intersection Townsend Road, Bulawayo, where one person died,” Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said in a statement.

At around 7:15PM, a Honda Fit being driven by a 33-year-old man from Matsheumhlope hit the pedestrian with its right-side mirror as he was crossing the road.

“The Honda Fit driver then stopped the vehicle to check on the victim who was struggling to stand up. The Toyota Fortuner then came and ran over the pedestrian and he did not stop,” said Insp Msebele.

The victim sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.
Police have blamed the speeding Toyota Fortuner driver, who vanished after the accident, for the fatality.

“The cause of accident was due to speeding by unknown driver of the Fortuner hence a charge of culpable homicide and failure to Stop and render assistance after an Accident will be preferred against him or her once arrested,” said Insp Msebele Nomalanga.

She urged motorists to be vigilant and to never flee from crash scenes.
“We encourage drivers to have proper look out when driving, and also desist from the tendency of running away after an accident. We appeal to anyone who might have information that may lead to the location and arrest of the accused to come forward,” she said.

Police also invited families who may be missing a relative matching the deceased’s description to visit the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) or the nearest police station.
