HIV/AIDS victims remembered

Budiriro Secondary School in Muzarabani hosted a candlelit memorial on Wednesday evening to remember and honour those who died of HIV/AIDS.
It was an emotional event for many people who attended and shared moving testimonies of how they have been living with the disease despite denial, stigma, and discrimination.

This led to the shedding of tears as sorrowful music permeated the room.

The event also served as an opportunity to acknowledge Government’s efforts in providing treatment to people living with HIV.

Ms Rumbidzai Kinichi, who was bedridden for two years, expressed gratitude to her community for their care and support.

The community and the Zimbabwe Network of People Living with HIV (ZNNP+) assisted in her children’s education and in purchasing medication and food.

Mr Douglas Mabhena, who also gave his testimony, thanked the District AIDS Co-ordinators for encouraging him to seek medical assistance.

“I was diagnosed at a time when HIV was considered shameful and frightening,” he said.

“The medication had adverse side effects, and people with HIV were stigmatised. Due to denial, I spent years seeking help from traditional healers and prophets. My wife was HIV negative.”

National AIDS Council Mashonaland Central provincial manager Mr Edgar Muzulu highlighted the vital role of domestic funding in providing support to people living with HIV.

The event was attended by the Provincial AIDS Action Committee (PAAC) chairperson, Senator Angelina Tongogara, her deputy Moreni Masanzu and other dignitaries.
