Hlangabeza stripped of Nash championship title

HLANGABEZA High School of Nkayi were stripped of the Nash Matabeleland North Under-20 boys’ soccer championship they had won at David Livingstone High in Ntabazinduna on Friday for using a red-carded player. Hlangabeza’s goalkeeper Makhosi Sibanda was sent off in the semi-final, but was fielded in the final they won 3-2 on penalties against Mosi oa Tunya High from Hwange district.

Following Hlangabeza’s disqualification, Mosi oa Tunya were crowned new provincial champions and will now represent Matabeleland North in the Nash national finals set for Gloag High School from September 25-27.

On their way to the final, Hlangabeza had overcome Majiji High of Bubi district 1-0 and drew 1-1 against Nhlambabaloyi High of Umguza. They also registered a goalless draw against Mavela Secondary of Tsholotsho district in the group stages.

In the semi-finals, Hlangabeza beat Zwangendaba from Lupane district 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw.

Mosi oa Tunya High beat Sojini from Umguza 2-0, dismissed Tohwe from Nkayi 1-0 and Zwangendaba 2-0.

The Hwange school then beat Majiji 3-0 in the semi-final to set a date with Hlangabeza.

Zwangendaba finished the tournament third while Majiji High were fourth.

Mosi oa Tunya High will be joined by Bulawayo champions Mpopoma High and Matabeleland South’s Thekwane High as well as champions of other provinces in the national finals this coming weekend.
