Hokonya hearing fails to take place again

Hokonya, who is the chairman of Zifa Central Region together with his Southern Region counterpart, Gift Banda were suspended last year on allegations of match fixing which rocked the Central Region in a scam which became known as Centralgate.

Both are denying the allegations.

Samukeliso Silengane, who was the acting Zimbabwe Referees Committee chairperson, was sucked into the scandal and was also swept by the tide.

Banda successfully challenged his suspension at the High Court but was banned for three years by the football mother body for taking football matters to court while the Central Region chairman took up his matter with Fifa arguing that from the day of his suspension no disciplinary committee had been constituted to hear allegations levelled against him within 14 days as stipulated in the Zifa constitution.

According to a letter in possession of this paper signed by a Zifa lawyer identified as T Hangazha, the disciplinary hearing against Hokonya once again failed to take place and the former Zimbabwe Saints secretary general might be summoned before the Ad Hoc Disciplinary Committee.

Part of the letter Hangazha wrote on 9 December reads:

“The above matter refers in which we would like to advise that Patrick Hokonya had been at Zifa Centralgate hearings being held at our offices since Monday. However, the hearings involving him did not take place as scheduled. If need be Hokonya will be summoned to appear before the Ad Hoc Disciplinary Committee.”

The Ad Hoc Disciplinary Committee led by Administrative Court Judge, Custom Kachambwa started hearings on Centralgate in October following the end of investigations led by former Fifa panel referee Brighton Mudzamiri which were concluded in August this year.

However, Zifa Board member competitions Benedict Moyo said the findings would only be made public only after the Ad Hoc Disciplinary Committee finishes its hearings.

The suspension of Hokonya has had its toll on the Central Region which has degenerated into chaos since his departure which has seen clubs refusing to adopt the region’s financial report of the just ended season.

Efforts to get comment from Hokonya were futile as he was said to be on holiday while Zifa chief executive officer, Jonathan Mashingaidze’s phone went unanswered.
