FIVE more people have been killed in road accidents, bringing the festive-season death toll to 86. Another 501 were injured in 953 accidents recorded since December 15, when the festive season began. The numbers are lower than last year when 164 people were killed while 749 were injured in 1 040 accidents by this time.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said police have impounded 1 318 vehicles and issued 93 931 tickets to motorists for committing traffic offences.

Chief Supt Nyathi said four people were injured yesterday morning when a PCJ bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a Mazda Bongo along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.

“The driver of the Mazda Bongo sustained serious head injuries and the bus was coming from Botswana heading towards the city centre,” he said.

He said the bus which had 35 passengers was following behind the Mazda Bongo. He said on approaching the Kuwadzana Extension roundabout, the bus ran into the back of the Mazda Bongo.

“Four people who were in the bus sustained minor injuries while the driver of the Mazda Bongo sustained head injuries.”
They were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment.

Chief Supt Nyathi urged motorists to avoid following too close when driving behind other vehicles and to exercise caution.
Last year, more than 200 people died while close to 1 000 others were injured in road traffic accidents during the one-month festive season.

Police attribute the decrease in accidents to awareness campaigns and their heavy presence on major roads.
Police said there were no major incidents of crime recorded countrywide.
