The mourners took a cue from President Mugabe, who described him as dependable and of strict Christian values.
Addressing mourners at a funeral wake in Harare on Saturday, the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces said Mapondera (78) was known for following Christian principles.
Speaking at the burial family spokesperson, Cde Philip Chiyangwa said the family would treasure Mapondera’s life as well-lived, adding that members should draw inspiration from him to ensure family unity.
Chief Zimunya paid tribute to his son-in-law whom he described as a pillar of strength not only to his family but those around him regardless of who they are.
Born in 1933, Mr Mapondera was educated at Goromonzi High School and attended the University of California at Berkeley in the United States of America where he graduated with a BA in Business Administration and later attained an MBA in Economics from the School of African and Oriental Studies at the University of London.
He also obtained a Diploma in Marketing from Columbia University in New York.
He was a prominent businessman, who held various positions in the private sector and served on various boards including TA Holdings, BATA, Old Mutual, ZBC, Harare Agricultural Show Society and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
He is survived by his wife Emily, three children and a grandchild. —Herald Reporter/ZBC-News.
