House of Assembly yesterday with members commending the role he played in pre- and post-independent Zimbabwe.
Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara said Zimbabweans had a lot of lessons to learn from General Mujuru’s life.
“Mujuru was a member of Zanu-PF but was accessible to all MDC formations and all political players in the country. He provided wise counsel to all of us and this inclusive Government is his product,” he said.
DPM Mutambara said Gen Mujuru played a critical role in the liberation struggle.
“Individuals make a difference, when (Herbert) Chitepo died in Zambia you see the footprint of Mujuru. When he went to Mozambique, you see the footprint of Mujuru in forming Zipa (Zimbabwe People’s Army),” said DPM Mutambara.
The DPM said Gen Mujuru had left a lesson that an individual can make history and be successful in various fields.
“I encourage our young people, our MPs to be superstars in everything we do,” he said.
Mbire representative Cde Paul Mazikana (Zanu-PF) said even Rhodesian Front army commander, the late General Peter Walls acknowledged that Gen Mujuru was pivotal in the success of the liberation struggle.
“Even General Peter Walls acknowledged his excellence and in one interview he said the only way the Rhodesians could win the war was through eliminating the likes of Josiah Tongogara and General Mujuru,” he said.
He said General Mujuru fought against the oppressive and racist white settler regime so that people could have access to their resources.
Mutasa Central legislator Trevor Saruwaka (MDC-T) said he was shocked by the General’s death and described him as a man of impeccable credentials and called for the speedy conclusion of investigations into his death.
“Those investigating the General’s death must know that Zimbabweans are waiting for the outcome of the investigations, the longer they take the more impatient Zimbabweans become,” he said.
Retired Brigadier-General Ambrose Mutinhiri and representative for Marondera West (Zanu-PF) who trained General Mujuru in Tanzania said he was a natural leader.
“Zimbabwe’s history would be incomplete without mentioning the name of Mujuru. I trained him in Tanzania and he was one with natural leadership qualities,” said Rtd Brig-Gen Mutinhiri.
“Even though he left to join Zanu at the formation of Zipa we chose him as commander because of his leadership qualities. He always led from the front but the one thing that worried him was that he always said there was no loyal opposition in Zimbabwe that could defend and promote the ideals of the struggle.”
Buhera West representative Eric Matinenga (MDC-T) also commended the role played by General Mujuru, but called for police to update the nation on investigations so that there is no speculation.
