HOUSE of Champions Athletics Club successfully hosted a track and field meet at White City Stadium on Saturday which was used as a selection competition for the AUSC Region 5 Games to be held in Malawi in December.
The club is the brainchild of former triple jumper and coach, Presley Mabhena. The idea behind coming up with this academy is to nurture talent, and expose it to the competitive world.
The academy was formed a few years ago and has had its programmes hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, things are now shaping up with the hosting of their first track and field event.
Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) chairperson Watson Madanyika stated:
“Our athletes are gearing up for the new season and this was an opportunity for them to have an indication of their present state.
“It’s also a welcome development to clubs hosting such competitions which are hugely beneficial for our athletes.”
Clubs that took part included Ihlosi, Yadah Datema Panthers, Cheetahs, Mosi Striders and Tshebetshebe.
National team athlete Denzil Simusialela won the men’s 200m finishing in a time of 21, 77 seconds. He was also won the 100m race in a time of 10, 57 seconds.
Ronald Muchichwa was first to cross the finish line in the 800m race in a time of 2 minutes 05 seconds.
Long distance runner Esnath Ndlovu of City Meats won the 3 000 m race having finished in 12 minutes 23 seconds. — @innocentskizoe
