How one woman’s ex helped make her dreams come true

NOMAZULU Moyo, a Zimbabwean journalist based in South Africa, has revealed that she is grateful to her ex-boyfriend for supporting her education.

Nomazulu had run away from home in 2007 due to a conflict with her stepmother and struggled to pay for her education while studying at Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) in South Africa. Her ex-boyfriend stepped in and paid for her to study journalism at Damelin College in Braamfontein.

The 32-year-old, who is now a co-owner of an online television network, Mat TV, covering news that affects the people of Matabeleland in South Africa and Zimbabwe, was on Saturday awarded by Chief Dakamela an appreciation award for her work as a diasporan journalist who covers Matabeleland affairs in depth.

“It is such a huge blessing to me as a young journalist. Really, I did not see it coming. I keep on doing things not realising that someone out there notices. I co-own an online TV called Mat TV on Facebook and YouTube with 66 000 followers.

“The TV started operating in 2019 and it covers news that affect the people of Matabeleland one way or the other in SA. There is much talent in our region and we felt that they were not receiving enough coverage in SA and Zimbabwe media, hence the creation of Mat TV. I have covered xenophobic-related news, and cultural news and also did live coverage when Elvis Nyathi was killed in SA. Over the years, people began to notice me. I honestly did not expect an award. I am glad the chief recognised me,” she said.

During an interview with the Saturday Chronicle during an award-giving event which was held at Dakamela Primary School in Nkayi District, Matabeleland North Province, Nomazulu recounted her past and the role her ex-boyfriend played in helping her achieve her aspirations. Although they broke up in 2021, she is still appreciative of her ex since she acknowledges his support during her academic career.

“My ex helped me with school fees when I was in college. By then we were still together. He played a huge role in my life, especially education-wise. I studied at Damelin College in South Africa where I acquired my journalism certificate.

“If you look at me now, I still bear the scar from the beating I received from my former stepmother. We used to leave the house to play as kids and forget to perform our responsibilities. When I was once requested to watch over a pot that was on the fire I forgot, the meal was burnt to ashes, and all hell broke loose. I was in Form Three and due to bitterness, I left Kezi, Gohole High School and moved to South Africa, where I attended Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) school while working as a domestic servant. I obtained my matric certificate here, which is the equivalent of Form Four on this side,” said Nomazulu.

The Sunday Express freelancer, who was raised by six stepmothers and her now deceased father in Kezi, Matabeleland South, said receiving the award has revived her journalism abilities, and her newfound admiration has inspired her to help the Matabeleland population more than hurt it.

“I am obsessed with the Ndebele culture, hence the quest to cover more stories in the region. The fact that someone has recognised me has made me continue doing great for the people in our region. Last year I also covered the Mzilikazi Day event in Bulawayo, eMhlahlandlela. I have previously worked for SA media, but nothing feels good like covering my own people’s affairs. I promise to continue doing my best,” she said.

Nomazulu’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and the support of loved ones. — @KarubwaTich [email protected]
