A 34-year-old man who stole $2 000 from his former wife has been sentenced to 12 months in prison.
Thembakuye Khumalo of Hlalani Kuhle Township Phase Two in Gwanda Town yesterday appeared before Gwanda magistrate Mr Arafat Kozanai to answer to a charge of theft of $2 000 from his former wife, Ms Sikhangezile Moyo (30) of House Number 1119 Phakama Township.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months in prison of which three months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
Another three months were suspended on condition that he pays back the complainant $370, which was not recovered by 30 September this year.
Khumalo would serve an effective six months in prison.
On 8 August at about 2pm, Khumalo who works for Gwanda Municipality, went to Ms Moyo’s house and stole $2 000 when she was away.
When Ms Moyo returned to her house at about 9pm, she discovered that her money had been stolen.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Khumalo.
A sum of $430 and clothes brought from the proceeds worth $1 200 were recovered.
