Hubby tries to kill HIV+ wife, court told

Prosper Dembedza Court Reporter
An HIV-positive woman approached the Harare Civil Court seeking a protection order against her husband who attempted to kill her twice through food poisoning.

Nyundo Chingwena claimed Calisto Nyagowa was in the habit of physically and verbally abusing her.

“I came to this court seeking a protection order against Nyagowa because he tried to kill me twice by poisoning my food,” she said.

Chingwena told magistrate Ms Audrey Tarugarira that Nyagowa was also in the habit of hiding her ARVs knowing fully well that she was surviving on them.

“I am now living in fear because his main aim is to kill me, yet he is the one who infected me with HIV,” said Chingwena.

She claimed Nyagowa once locked her in their bedroom while she was asleep and left a knife underneath her pillow.

Nyagowa told the court that he was not opposed to Chingwena’s application.

Ms Tarugarira granted the order by consent which barred Nyagowa from threatening and physically or verbally abusing Chingwena.
