THE Hurungwe Rural District Council (HRDC), has started consulting residents, the business community, traditional leaders and officials from local government on street names and names of suburbs at Magunje Growth Point and under Chirundu Town Board.
The local council met with the stakeholders this Wednesday where possible names for streets and suburbs were suggested.
The proposed names were those of traditional chiefs, renowned politicians and heroes such as Chiefs Chanetsa, Chundu, Dandawa, Dendera, Mudzimu and Kazangarare.
“We have to name the suburbs and streets after our traditional chiefs and liberation war heroes because this will help preserve our culture and history,” said one resident.
Another suggestion was to name some of the streets after the chiefs’ totems and prominent business entrepreneurs who made an impact in society.
Another resident, Mr Noah Pito said the names were supposed to be given according to the prominence of the road and size of a suburb.
Chief Elfas Dendera, said naming of the streets and suburbs was long overdue.
HRDC chairperson, Mary Mliswa-Chikoka said the consultations were in line with the Second Republic’s agenda of leaving no place and no one behind.
She said the names that were going to be used would reflect the area’s heritage and culture.
