HARARE Civil Court Magistrate Ms Johanna Mukweshe has warned a Harare man, Jealous Chikondowa, against physically abusing his wife and children for no reason.
Ms Mukwesha said this after she granted the man’s wife, Getrude Chakarima, a protection order against him.
Chakarima had accused Chikondowa of insulting her using vulgar language and assaulting her and their children without provocation.
”He last hit me on Monday and when the children tried to stop him, he beat them too until our neighbours called the police,” she said.
Chakarima told the court that Chikondowa does this almost every day.
”My neighbourhood now views my house as a hotbed of noise and violence due to his behaviour,” she said.
She also told the court that Chikondowa burns everything she buys, accusing her of using money she gets from boyfriends.
“I bought a couch and when I came back home from work, it was fire outside,” she said.
“I asked him why he did that and he said that he would not sit on a couch I bought using my boyfriend’s money.”
She asked the court to bar Chikondowa from disposing of her property, calling her a prostitute and beating her and the kids.
Chikondiwa denied the allegations, saying the only time he beat the children was when they had disrespected him.
“She tells our children to disrespect me. She tells them that I am not their father because I do not go to work. I got so mad one day and I beat them only to stop them from disrespecting me.”
He told the court that he is not violent and alleged that Chakarima was the one harassing him.
“Ever since she found out that l am HIV positive, she treats me badly, telling me to leave her and marry another wife,” he said.
”She is lying because she wants to get rid of me.”
After hearing both sides, magistrate Mukwesha granted a protection order in favour of Chakarima.
