Hwange derby ends in stalemate

THE much anticipated Hwange derby between ZPC Hwange and Hwange Football Club in the Zifa Southern Region Division One League ended in a 1-1 stalemate at a packed Ingagula Stadium yesterday.

Ernest Gwitima opened the scoring for the Try Ncube coached Hwange before Bhekani Sibanda equalised for ZPC Hwange who are mentored by Njabulo Dube. Yesterday’s stalemate means the race is on for the championship between the two teams from the coal mining town. Hwange remain on top of the log with 79 points, with their neighbours five points behind. With three matches to go before the end of the season, any of the two teams can still win it since there is nine points to play for.

Hwange’s remaining matches are against Ajax (home), Indlovu Iyanyathela (home) and Makhandeni Pirates (away). For ZPC Hwange they travel to Bulawayo to face Indlovu Iyanyathela, get a bye worth three points from the now defunct Indonsakusa and before taking on Zimbabwe Saints at home.

With the stadium bursting with vociferous fans, with Chipangano enjoying the bulk of the backing, the match started off at a slow pace with the score 0-0 heading into the break. Gwitima fired Chipangano ahead with an hour played and they led for the better part of the second half until Sibanda levelled matters with two minutes remaining. – @Mdawini_29
