Hwange goalkeeper holds players responsible for team’s poor performance

Hwange goalkeeper Collin Phiri blames players for the team’s position.

Hwange currently occupies the last place on the log with seven points from 14 games.

Phiri said they need to avoid mistakes and do better as players.

“When it comes to our poor results, I blame us as players.  This is not on the coach or the management.

“We as players are to blame for our losses. We are conceding unnecessary. We are missing a lot of chances. There are more than two games that we lost due to silly mistakes. We have to do better as players and avoid human errors.

“We put ourselves in this position.  It is up to us as players to take our team out of the situation,” said Phiri.

The former FC Platinum reserve shotstopper believes there is still time for Hwange to recharge and turn the fortunes around.

“It is not too late yet. We only need two wins, and things will be different. We have realised our mistakes, and it is something that is avoidable.

“We still have hope. We plan on creating more goals and avoiding conceding. We have to be more solid at the back,” he added.

Hwange lost some senior players at the beginning of the 2024 season.

Phiri said the team needs some experience it has lost.

“The team lost most of its senior players, and that has somehow disturbed us.

“We were supposed to be building from last season. The team has more youngsters who are still regenerating. It’s good to be grooming youngsters, but time is not on our side. The team needs some experience and seniors to rely on,” said the former Kabwe Warriors goalie.

Phiri joined Hwange at the beginning of the season.
