HWANGE Colliery Company fully supports the Government’s sporting programmes which seek to benefit communities.
The assurance was given by the coal mining giant’s managing director Thomas Makore when he officiated at the company’s Old Mutual-sponsored sports day prize-giving ceremony held at the Edmund Davies Hall last Friday.
The prize-giving ceremony was after a day’s competitions by the coalmining giant’s employees who participated in 10 different sporting activities.The sports day is meant to console the employees following the tragic events of the 1972 Kamandama Mine disaster that killed 427 miners.
“Hwange Colliery Company fully supports Government’s sporting programmes for the benefit of communities, suffice to say that only two weeks ago we hosted the Zimbabwe National Youth Games here in Hwange. The sporting event spread across the company’s vast sporting facilities and is aimed at getting employees to bond and promote social cohesion for better productivity.
“The event is in sync with Government’s Community Sport and Recreation Club System which was launched by Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko in Umguza district in July.
“The day helps us maintain a healthy lifestyle through involvement in sports. Everyone is a winner, it’s not about the prizes but it’s about participation.”This event is also meant to remember the 427 miners who lost their lives in the Kamandama Mine disaster of 1972,” said Makore.
He said Old Mutual in partnership with RM Insurance have been bankrolling the event since its inception.The employees competed in badminton, basketball, darts, bowling, golf, squash, tennis, ladies and men soccer.ends
