HWANGE FC have tightened their grip on the Pacific Breeze Southern Region Soccer League title race after opening a six-point lead at the top of the table following the completion of Round 15 fixtures.
The coalminers have emerged as the pace-setters in the race for the coveted sole promotion ticket to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, producing a string of commanding performances that have left their rivals chasing shadows.
Having gone through the campaign unbeaten so far, Hwange have amassed 38 points to establish a healthy cushion over second-placed Talen Vision FC, who sit on 34 points. Jordan FC remain firmly in the hunt in third place with 33 points, ensuring that the title race remains alive despite Hwange’s growing advantage.
What has made Hwange’s campaign particularly impressive is their balance at both ends of the pitch.
The former Premiership side have developed a reputation for defensive solidity while maintaining a potent attacking threat, attributes that have propelled them to the summit of the standings.
Talen Vision FC have also enjoyed a remarkable season and remain unbeaten, demonstrating consistency that has kept them within touching distance of the leaders. Jordan FC, meanwhile, have quietly gone about their business and continue to position themselves as serious contenders for promotion.
Bulawayo Warriors FC occupy fourth position on 28 points and remain hopeful of mounting a late charge, while Nkayi United FC complete the top five with 27 points after a commendable campaign.
The race for the top spots is far from over, with Mega Watt FC on 25 points and Victoria Falls Herentals FC on 22 points still capable of influencing the destination of the championship.
Meanwhile, the battle for survival is shaping up to be equally compelling. Bosso90 FC and Imbizo FC find themselves hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone on 15 points apiece, while Njube Spurs FC remain under pressure with 13 points.
Mosi Rovers FC and basement side Aqua Stars FC face an uphill battle to avoid the drop, with every remaining fixture now carrying enormous significance.
As the Southern Region Soccer League season gathers momentum, Hwange FC have undoubtedly laid down a strong marker in their quest for a return to top-flight football. However, with Talen Vision and Jordan FC refusing to surrender, the battle for promotion promises plenty more drama in the weeks ahead.
Top Five After Round 15
Hwange FC – 38 points
Talen Vision FC – 34 points
Jordan FC – 33 points
Bulawayo Warriors FC – 28 points
Nkayi United FC – 27 points.
