THE Hwange Open will finally tee off at Hwange Golf Club on November 28. The event was supposed to have been held on October 24 but was postponed as the organising committee felt the environment in the town, which had been hit by industrial action involving workers of the coal mine, was not conducive.

Around 150 professional and amateur golfers are expected to take part. The Pro-Am tournament will start on Thursday with Friday, Saturday and Sunday set for the main competition under the individuals’ medal format. Last year’s the event was Brian Gondo. Ryan Cairns, who is playing well in the Sunshine Tour, will remain the one to beat.

Nyasha Muyambo, Ignatius Mketeteke and Tongo Charamba are some of the big names likely to take part. Before the Hwange Open, professionals are likely to take part in the Harare Open set for November 22. The venue is yet to be confirmed.

Zimbabwe Golf Association, vice-president Boniface Chigorimbo, said the dates for the Harare and Hwange Open were now final.
“There will be the Harare Open first before the Hwange Open and the two will be Pro-Am events.

“The matchplay will follow in early December before we go for the national handicapping at Norton or Ruwa. The amateurs will make another long trip to Vumba for the Troutbeck Open set for December 13-15 while the National Championships will close the 2013 calendar,” Chigorimbo said.
