TWO goals by Brighton Makopa and another by substitute Courage Sibanda were enough for Hwange to officially survive relegation as they hammered relegation threatened Black Rhinos 3-0 in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League at the Colliery yesterday.
Bulawayo Chiefs eased their relegation fears after registering an important 2-0 victory over visiting Triangle United, who now face a bigger risk of being demoted from the top-flight league.
The victory moved Chiefs into position 12 on the table with 39 points while Triangle United, with two games left to play in the league season find themselves in the danger zone on position 16 with 34 points.
Yadah beat outgoing champions FC Platinum 2-1 at Baobab Stadium with King Nadolo grabbing the winner a minute from full time to ensure the relegation battle will go to the wire.
Greenfuel allowed CAPS United to come from two goals down in a 2-2 draw in Chisumbanje, a result that keeps the newcomers part of the relegation equation for now.
Hwange goalkeepers coach Edmore Sibanda said the home side also desperately needed the three points to secure stay in topflight football.
“Had they picked the three points Maybe we were going to drop because they are just six points behind us. So we needed the three points. The boys have now jelled and are showing that they can stand the pressure and for the fans we are happy they came and we hope they continue like that,” he said.
Chaminuka said Rhinos are not throwing in the towel yet as they focus on the remaining games that can give them six points and finish on 38 points.
He blamed his charges for failing to use opportunities.
“We came here with high expectations to collect not less than three points. They had their opportunities and they were clean at them. That’s what happens in football, you fail to score you lose.
“We still have two games and we still hope that we will collect the six points and we will fight to the end, we can collect six points and some teams may fail. Our challenge was converting, we had opportunities to score but we failed and they had theirs and scored,” he said.
