The launch of the Titan New Energy project has been welcomed by Minister of Energy and Power Development, Edgar Moyo who described it as a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards sustainable development.

President Mnangagwa officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for a new 720MW power plant in Hwange on Tuesday, which aligns with the National Development Strategy (NDS 1 and 2) Vision 2030.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Moyo hailed the Titan New Energy project as a significant milestone, noting that it not only advances Zimbabwe’s shared goals but also showcases the nation’s collaborative spirit and unity.

“Today we celebrate not just the launch of a new infrastructure but a transformative vision that will energize our communities and empower our industries. The Titan New Energy sponsorship and Dinson project are a testimony to our government’s wavering commitment to fostering sustainable energy solution that enhance our natural capacity ensuring that reliable electricity is accessible to both our communities and businesses,” he said.

The Minister said the 720MW project will transform Hwange and other regions into a thriving economic hub, with far reaching benefits. The project is a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Titan New Energy and ZESA Holdings.

“The journey to this movement has been of numerous stakeholders across various sectors. I would like to convey my hearty gratitude to his Excellence President Mnangagwa and also SADC chair for your stand fast leadership and visionary approach. It is through your guidance that we are able to turn our aspirations into reality. Without you father we would have been nothing, with nothing and doing nothing,” he said.

ZESA Holdings Executive Chairman, Dr. Sydney Gata, also noted that the project will increase Zimbabwe’s power generation capacity, reducing import reliance and ending load shedding.

He expressed his relief that the launch of the Titan New Energy project in Hwange marks the beginning of the end of load shedding in Zimbabwe.

“This project is only one of eighteen projects being constructed with some already underway. Despite facing challenges due to sanctions, Zimbabwe’s resilient people have attracted investors to develop the country’s infrastructure. I am happy that after many missions of resistance we continued engaging and we are going to be the first country in Southern Africa to engage private capital,” said Dr Gata.

Dr Gata thanked President Mnangagwa for his exceptional communication skills, which successfully secured investment from China in Zimbabwe’s infrastructure development, demonstrating confidence in the country’s leadership.
