THE Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Foundation has mourned the death of distinguished medical specialist and National University of Science and Technology-(NUST) lecturer, Professor Alfred Greanious Mavondo, who died last Friday in Bulawayo and was buried on Tuesday.
The association said it worked closely with the late Professor Mavondo who was leading in research to find a solution to the hydrocephalus condition.
The founder of the Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Foundation, Pastor Lynn Ndlovu, said they have been robbed by his death as he was the director of the Association`s Department of Research Centre to help get a solution the condition.
Pastor Lynn said the late Professor always associated with all the programmes they did to assist children with the condition.
“I cannot believe that he is late because when we were doing our last fundraising for Hydrocephalus Foundation he said ‘use me while I am still alive’.
“He understood the vision and took it up and ran with it. The organization will not be the same without him,” she said.
“He was so committed to the work we are doing. He wanted a solution closer to a cure for the condition. He was very passionate about Spina Bifido and Hydrocephalus.”
A renowned scholar in chemical pathology and the pathophysiology of Malaria and HIV/AIDS, Prof Mavondo devoted his academic career to advancing knowledge in human disease processes and their management.
His passion for human pathophysiology inspired pioneering research into malaria pathophysiology using animal models and the investigation of phytochemicals as alternative therapeutic interventions.
His extensive research interests included malarial and HIV/AIDS pathophysiology, glucose homeostasis, phytochemicals and phytotherapeutics, adolescent HIV/AIDS prevention initiatives, interprofessional education and collaborative practice, dissemination and implementation science, and scientific literature review.
Beyond his scholarly pursuits, Prof Mavondo was an accomplished international academic institutions inspector, author, presenter and mentor.
