‘I was happy in Manchester’

LONDON. — Robin van Persie was still willing to fight for his Manchester United future this month – until it was no longer an “honest battle”. Van Persie has also criticised Louis van Gaal for not giving him an “honest chance” to fight for his place at Manchester United.

The Dutch forward has joined Fenerbahce after 11 years in the English Premier League, the last three at Old Trafford.

It was expected that Van Persie would thrive under Van Gaal, a manager that had brought the best out of him as Holland coach. Yet Wayne Rooney was installed as club captain, with Van Persie struggling to get regular game time.

Injuries did not help his cause, but the 31-year-old says being left on the bench in the April defeat to Chelsea showed things were not right, report the Manchester Evening News.

“That was one of the first signals things weren’t going in the right direction,” he told the Sunday Times.

“I asked to play in the reserves, to get my minutes, but after was on the bench again. The atmosphere changed between me and Louis and people at the club saw it, but I was always professional.

“At that point I didn’t think to leave. Bouchra was happy. The kids were happy. I was happy in Manchester.” — The Mirror.
