AT a time when some Zimbabweans are finding cruise ship jobs attractive, the Icon of the Seas, the highly anticipated cruise ship by Royal Caribbean International, is set to make waves in the world of luxury cruising.

With its impressive size, extravagant amenities, and breathtaking design, this majestic vessel is a sight to behold and it would not be surprising to learn that a Zimbabwean had a hand in its construction. And no one will bat an eyelid when they found that a few of our citizens will be on board as workers or passengers when the ship sets sail in January 2024.

However, as we marvel at the beauty and grandeur of the Icon of the Seas and picture sons and daughters of the soil on the ship, it’s important to reflect on the lessons learned from the tragic history of its predecessor, the Titanic.

For some, the mere mention of a colossal vessel like this brings back haunting memories of the ill-fated Titanic. The tragic story of the Titanic serves as a reminder that no matter how magnificent a ship may be, it should never underestimate the power of nature and must prioritise safety above all else.

The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 is a tale that has captivated the world for over a century. Considered an unsinkable marvel of engineering, the Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage amid great fanfare and publicity. It was a symbol of luxury and elegance, carrying the hopes and dreams of its passengers. However, fate had a different plan. On that fateful night, the Titanic struck an iceberg in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic leading to its eventual demise.

The tragedy of the Titanic served as a wake-up call to the designers and operators of future ships. It highlighted the need to prioritise safety measures and underscored the importance of respecting the unpredictable forces of nature. Since then, significant advancements have been made in maritime engineering and safety regulations to ensure that such a catastrophe never repeats itself.

While the Icon of the Seas may evoke memories of the Titanic, it is essential to acknowledge the progress that has been made in shipbuilding and safety standards over the past century. The Icon of the Seas stands as a testament to these advancements, boasting state-of-the-art technology and safety features that surpass those of its predecessors.

However, recent events, such as the tragic sinking and implosion of the Titan submarine, remind us that even the most advanced vessels can still face unforeseen challenges. The Titan’s catastrophic implosion serves as a sombre reminder that the ocean can be unforgiving, demanding the utmost caution and preparedness from those who venture into its depths.

Therefore, it is imperative that the designers, operators and crew of the Icon of the Seas prioritise safety above all else. The lessons learned from the Titanic and the Titan submarine should serve as a constant reminder that no matter how impressive a ship may be, it must always prioritise the well-being and security of its passengers and crew.

Royal Caribbean International has an impeccable track record when it comes to safety and they understand the gravity of their responsibility. The Icon of the Seas has been meticulously constructed, tested, and outfitted with state-of-the-art safety measures to ensure the utmost protection for everyone on board. From advanced navigation systems to comprehensive lifeboat and evacuation procedures, every aspect of the ship’s safety protocols has been carefully considered.

The Icon of the Seas is a true marvel of engineering and design. With its colossal size and sleek lines, it exudes a sense of majesty and elegance. The ship’s interior is a masterpiece of modern architecture, featuring stunning open spaces, luxurious accommodations and captivating views.

One of the standout features of the Icon of the Seas is its water park, Category 6, which boasts six thrilling water slides that promise aquatic adventures for all ages. The ship also offers an array of family-friendly areas, revamped pool decks, an aqua dome, and an aqua theatre, ensuring that there is never a dull moment on board.

Measuring at a staggering 1 200 feet (365 metres) in length and weighing an astounding 250 800 tonnes, the Icon of the Seas sets a new standard in size and grandeur. Its passenger capacity exceeds all expectations, with the ability to accommodate over 7 960 individuals made up of 5 610 passengers and 2 350 crew members.

Royal Caribbean proudly reveals that the Icon of the Seas surpasses its  largest ship, the Wonder of the Seas, by an impressive six percent in size and an additional 10 feet in length. The vessel’s construction commenced in April 2022 and it is now eagerly awaiting its inaugural voyage, scheduled to depart from Miami on January 27, 2024. The Icon of the Seas will be based in Miami until at least April 2025, offering seven-night cruises to the Caribbean.

Unveiling an array of unparalleled features, the Icon of the Seas promises an unforgettable experience for its passengers. These include a captivating water park, dedicated areas for families, revamped pool decks, an aqua dome area, an aqua theatre area and breathtaking floor-to-ceiling windows that provide awe-inspiring 220-degree views. The ship will also feature a vast park adorned with thousands of real plants, a swim-up bar, an infinity pool and more.

Once fully completed, the Icon of the Seas will soar to a height of 20 decks and all the adventures within Category 6 will be complimentary. As passengers explore the ship, they will be treated to breathtaking panoramic views through the floor-to-ceiling windows that adorn the vessel. The Icon of the Seas truly brings the beauty of the sea to life within its walls.

It’s important to appreciate the engineering marvel that the Icon of the Seas represents while also acknowledging the lessons learned from the past. This ship is a testament to human innovation and the desire to create extraordinary experiences. As the world embarks on a new era of cruising, it must be reminded of the importance of safety and respect for nature as it pursues beauty and wonder. If the designers take hid of the advice, no lives will be lost and most importantly no Zimbabwean will be inadvertently buried at sea. –@plainstan
