‘If I had raped her, she would be dead’

Marvelous Moyo Gwanda Correspondent
A MAN charged over a string of sickening sex attacks on a three-year-old girl shocked a court yesterday after declaring: “If I had raped her, she would be dead.” Brighton Moyo (20), of the Marriage Quarters section of Gwanda’s Jahunda suburb, told Gwanda regional magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza he was HIV positive.

He told the court he was already aware of his status before the alleged attacks on his victim between February and October this year.
Taking the stand in his own defence, Moyo told the magistrate: “If I’m the one who raped the complainant, it was going to be easily noticed because she could have been severely injured or could have died considering my age. She’s too young for me.”

A nurse from Gwanda Provincial Hospital told the trial that after examining Moyo, it was realised that the same yellowish vaginal discharge seen on the toddler was similar to fluids observed on his privates.

“That nurse lied before the court. I think she just wants to see me behind bars,” Moyo protested.
Prosecuting, Mr Johannes Tlou pressed  Moyo:  “I put it to you that you had the same discharge similar to that found on the complainant, which shows that you raped her.

“The complainant mentioned you as the person that injured her which shows that she was telling the truth. The nurse also recorded what she had seen.”

Mr Tlou told the court that Moyo had been left to look after the child on the occasions when the sex attacks happened.
Alarm was raised when the child’s mother, while bathing her, noticed a yellowish discharge from her privates.

Moyo was remanded in custody to 13 December for judgment.
