Ignoring alerts costs lives: CPU on Filabusi flooded bridge tragedy

THE Civil Protection Unit (CPU) of Zimbabwe has expressed concern over the number of people who continue to die from crossing flooded rivers, even after countless alerts have been issued.

CPU chief director Mr Nathan Nkomo said: “We are aware of the eight people, including a newborn baby, who reportedly died last night after a vehicle was swept off a low-lying bridge by the flooded Tshangamutophe River in Mulula, Insiza District. As CPU, we are worried about such deaths, especially after all the communications we have issued advising people to avoid crossing flooded rivers and bridges.”

He urged people to listen to the alerts and warnings that are given because they are critical in saving lives.

Mr Nkomo said it was saddening how people continue to be reckless and ignorant in such circumstances.

“Its obvious Government has to come in and assist the families of the deceased, but we continue to be worried about people who put themselves in danger after being warned countless times. The same Government coming in to assist would have issued countless alerts and warned people several times, but they go on to do the opposite, and lives are lost,” he added.
