IIAZ joins African Federation Institutes of Internal Auditors

Internal Auditors – whose objective is to provide a unified voice of members on the global arena.
Institute of Internal Auditors of Zimbabwe president, Mr Tapiwa Mapukute told delegates who attended the annual conference, which ended in Victoria Falls last week that the institute would actively participate in this federation to advance the interest of the African Internal Audit practitioners.

As a member of the global Institute of Internal Auditors, Mr Mapukute said the institute would also participate in global council meetings, internal conferences and events.
During the year, the institute managed to come up with a number of initiatives to improve operations of internal auditors.

The institute has identified continuous professional education as one of its key strategic action plans.
“The bar is rising, and we need to keep up. Therefore, training is an investment that must grow substantially, at a higher level, and more often than current pace,” said Mr Mapukute.
The institute has also partnered the Zimbabwe Open University in developing an Internal Audit degree.

“I am glad to report that the Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Internal Auditing was successfully launched in August 2011.
“This degree will enable our members, who previously were not able to register for international certifications to qualify for enrolment,” said Mr Mapukute.

The institute provides support for the attainment of international certifications through the provision of recommended study materials.
Through the Research and Standards Committee, the institute is working on rolling out a Quality Assurance Review Program by the end of the year to enable organisations to comply with international Professional

Practices Framework, which requires external assessments to be conducted once every five years.
“This process is already at an advanced stage as the committee has already developed the external quality assurance review teams and eventual accreditation of external services providers.

“The research and standards committee is also proactively involved in the drafting of the National Code on Corporate Governance for Zimbabwe, and is represented in the Zimbabwe Leadership Forum,” said Mr Mapukute.

The institute is also in the process of mobilising its membership that had fallen to 450 for both the local and central Government sectors and the institute is targeting about 750 members by end of 2012.
The institute’s annual conference ended in Victoria Falls on Friday, last week and was attended by more than 250 delegates.

The conference was held under the theme, “Standing Tall – Reinforcing Internal Audit Value”.
