LIBERATION war music icon, Dickson “Cde Chinx” Chingaira, has dismissed reports doing rounds on social media that he was dead, calling those who were spreading the hoax insane and heartless. Social media sites, Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp were yesterday and on Tuesday abuzz with news that the war veteran had collapsed and died at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare. In no time, many condolence messages began pouring in.
Unfortunately, the Ngorimba, Zvikomborero and Nerudo hit-maker was unreachable on his phones at the time the hoax started spreading on Tuesday, leaving many to believe he had indeed died.
It was one of Cde Chinx’s purported sisters, who uses account name — Privie Coffee on Facebook who came to the rescue, advising people to take down their posts concerning the legend’s “death”. She said that he was alive but unwell and that the posts were traumatising his family abroad.
The music icon yesterday took a swipe at those circulating his death hoax.
“It’s pure madness that people were saying I’m dead. They should be serious about life. They can’t move around announcing that I’m dead. Where did they get that information from? I’m alive and kicking,” said Cde Chinx.
The war veteran said he was, however, unwell and was admitted at St Anne’s Hospital in Avondale, Harare, yesterday as he is suffering from a bone ailment.
“I’ve had the bone problem for more than a year. I’ve been taking medication for the ailment and doctors say I’ll be up and about in no time. Those who wanted me dead will be ashamed on that day,” said Cde Chinx.
He said the death rumour could have been triggered by a friend who he had told about his sickness last Sunday.
“All I said was that I wasn’t feeling well because of my bones. My whole body aches because of the bones. After that, I heard people saying that I’m dead. It’s surprising.”
Once he recovers, Cde Chinx plans to work on a single about Chimurenga.
“As soon as I get the green light from the doctor, I’ll be in the studio working on a single about Chimurenga. There’s nothing that can stop me from doing what I love the most, composing and producing music,” he said.
The artiste joins a whole list of local other celebrities Winky D, Bev, Oliver Mtukudzi and Leonard Zhakata who have been rumoured dead in recent years.
