The Department of Immigration in Beitbridge on Sunday will host a football and netball tournament this Sunday in honour of the late Principal Immigration Officer [PIO] Tapiwa Cynthia Bvekerwa.

The tournament is also being used to promote safe migration and to discourage issues of drug and substance abuse that have become a cause for concern in the community and nationally.

In a public notice, the Department said the sports tournament kicks off at 9AM at Ronnie’s Arena [Mabidi Stadium].

“It brings together teams from various public institutions in a spirit of unity, wellness, and sportsmanship,” said the notice.

The late senior immigration officer died in a road traffic accident recently while she was travelling from Harare to Beitbridge.

Eight football teams are split into two groups.

Group A is featuring Busters, Inspectors, Trust Me, and ZIMRA while the Department of Immigration, Rovers, Supa Strikas, and Beitbridge Magistrates Court are competing in Group B.

Matches are running concurrently at Arena A and Arena B.

In netball, ZIMRA, Immigration, ZRP, and Trust Me are competing in a round-robin format.

The trophy presentation ceremony will be held at Arena A after the final match.

The Regional Immigration Officer for the Southern Region, Mr Joshua Chibundu, will lead the proceedings.

The region covers Beitbridge, Masvingo, Sango, and Chiredzi.
