The Pomona Waste to Energy project must be judiciously carried out and concluded according to plan, Vice President Kembo Mohadi said yesterday at the groundbreaking ceremony in Harare.

So far the site has created employment for 188 people. Significant progress has been made with landscaping, road tarring, and landfill encapsulation.

On top of waste management, the project is anticipated to generate 22MW of electricity.

VP Mohadi said the progress at the site has so far been impressive and shamed the prophets of doom who had initially doubted it.

“The event marks another important milestone in the history of solid management in Harare Province and the country at large,” said VP Mohadi.

“We have witnessed the official groundbreaking ceremony of a world-class solid waste management project.

“This resonates well with our national vision of 2030, and the City of Harare’s vision of being a world-class city by the year 2025. It is our expectation that this project will be judiciously carried out and concluded according to plan.”

VP Mohadi said yesterday’s occasion demonstrated the continuation of a fruitful cooperation between the public and private sector.

“This project dovetails with our five-year economic development plan the National Development Strategy 1 aimed at repositioning the country as one of the strongest economies in the region,” said VP Mohadi.

He commended the transformation at the site, which has been upgraded from a dumpsite.
