ZIMBABWE made history by becoming the first African nation to play host to T10 cricket following the launch of the AfroZim T10 tournament in Harare yesterday.
The tournament, launched yesterday at Harare International Conference Centre, will take place next month.
Supported by businessman Shaji UI Mulk the franchise cricket will see six franchises both locally and internationally taking part.
Speaking at the launch yesterday Mulk said he was happy with the launch and is looking forward to the games.
“It is a good move for Zimbabwe as they made history by becoming the first African nation to introduce T10 cricket which we are launching.
“The franchises will give opportunities to all cricket loving people to witness some of the world’s best players live as there are so many interested players.
There is an opportunity to sell some of our players as well as T10 is widely followed and for upcoming Zimbabwean players they will get some chances to showcase their talent.
“The franchises will be allowed to sign players of their choices and this will make the T10 more competitive,” said Mulk.
Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni said the concept is a plus for ZC and they were happy to have partnered Mulk for the historic cricket event.
“We have always admired some Qatar T10 and Abu Dhabi T10 Leagues but finally it right on our doorstep.
“There was through considerations taken before we entered the agreement and I am happy that everything is going on well ever since we engaged the world governing board the ICC.
T10 cricket or Ten10 cricket is a short form of cricket. Two teams play a single innings, which is restricted to a maximum of ten overs (60 legal balls) per side, with the game lasting approximately 90 minutes.
The first competition using this format took place in December 2017, the opening season of the T10 League in the United Arab Emirates.
The (ICC) officially sanctioned the league in 2020.
