ZKS Spinners Arena is located at Emthunzini in Bulawayo, near Khami Dam. Drifting and spinning are driving techniques that involve deliberately losing traction and controlling the car through sharp turns or circles. The drivers often get out of their moving cars and strike poses, adding to the drama and flair of the performance.
The sport is popular in Western countries, but relatively new in Bulawayo. The most common cars used for spinning are the BMW E30, Nissan Skyline and box-shape Toyota Corollas.
Teams that will be doing the spinning work at the event include Amakhosi, Sbahle, Mac D, AK 47, King Fly, Ingwazi Ezimnyama, The Rock (all from Bulawayo), DJ Raza (Gweru) as well as Team Ice and Saviour (from Harare), among other spinners.
United Kingdom-based businessman Zakhele Mlilo, who is the founder of ZKS Spinners Arena, said as the nation celebrates being independent, he saw it fit that they come up with an initiative that will allow car enthusiasts to gather and have fun together.
He also has learnt a lot from their previous events held at ZKS spinning arena and he said they have managed to upgrade the entertainment segment with DJs Juzzah, Mateu and We Blessed DJ rotating on decks.
“I had been passionate about spinning for a long time, but there was no proper venue for it in Bulawayo. Last year I then decided to find a piece of land and build a drift pad, which can accommodate up to 20 drifting cars. The land that has allowed us to have this beautiful place called ZKS Spinners Arena was fought for by our heroes and as we celebrate Independence Day, it makes sense to me to pride ourselves on the sacrifices our fathers made because now we are free to enjoy our lives wherever we want.
“The weather is conducive for us to have fun. I think the magnitude of people that will be attending will get to enjoy themselves on this special day. They should expect fun filled with adrenaline at the same time listening to great music and enjoying delicious food,” said Mlilo.
