Independence preps on track

Yesterday the Minister of Media, Information and Publicity Webster Shamu announced that the Children’s Party which was supposed to be held at the Harare International Conference Centre on Sunday the 17th has been moved to its traditional venue, the City Sports Centre, on the same day.
This is because the HICC already had a standing booking for a church event. The celebrations will be held under the theme: “Unity, Peace and Development”.
Meanwhile, Zanu-PF is urging Zimbabweans from all walks of life to attend this year’s independence celebrations set for the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Monday.
The nation, the party said, should unite in celebrating victory against imperialism.
Zimbabwe celebrates its 31 years of independence from the British on April 18 yearly. The celebrations in Harare will run concurrently with other events in all the country’s 10 provinces. Zanu-PF spokesperson, Cde Rugare Gumbo, urged all Zimbabweans regardless of one’s political affiliation to grace the occasion.
“Everything is on course and we urge our people, all Zimbabweans, to come for the independence celebrations on Monday,” said Cde Gumbo.
“They would be ferried from the usual pick up points. We are celebrating our victory against imperialism, the creation of a nation of Zimbabwe and land reclamation.”
He said Zimbabweans would also be celebrating economic empowerment and other achievements made in various sectors of the economy since independence.
Cde Gumbo, however, said no one would be forced to attend the celebrations.
“We do not force anyone to come but we urge our people to attend because this is an important national event,” he said.
Massive gigs to celebrate Zimbabwe’s independence have been lined up in Shamva with the main event set for Ascot Stadium in Gweru on April 21.
