Three siblings were on Thursday night burnt to death when a house they were sleeping in caught fire in Epworth. The cause of the fire has been attributed to a candle left burning where the children were sleeping.

The incident occurred at around 10pm and the deceased have been identified as Melania (9), Jeremiah (6) and Samuel Tsuro (2).

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday confirmed the incident.

“The informant, Kudakwashe Tsuro, aged 44, who is employed as a truck driver, arrived from South Africa on July 2 in the company of his wife,” she said.

“He then called Tanaka Tsuro (15), Mathew Tsuro (12) and Revai Rwodzi (16) to come to the bus stop. The three left the children sleeping in one of the rooms at the house.”

When they returned home 30 minutes later they discovered that the house had caught fire.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said Kudakwashe went into the house and failed to locate the three children as a result of smoke.

He rushed to Epworth Police Station to make a report.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered that Samuel was already dead and rescued Melania and Jeremiah whom they took to Ebenezer Private Clinic in Hatfield where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged members of the public not to leave children unattended, especially in rooms where there was fire.

The incident came barely a week after a 45-year- old woman was burnt beyond recognition when a room she was sleeping in caught fire, also in Epworth.

The fire was caused by a candle that had been lit by her daughter.
