THE 2015 infrastructure indaba begins today in Kadoma with players in the construction industry expected to discuss opportunities in the sector.
A majority of local building contractors are struggling to make ends meet in the wake of the ongoing liquidity crunch that has seen major infrastructure projects being suspended.
Zimbabwe Building Contractors’ Association president Obert Sibanda said the three-day convention would seek to find ways of unlocking opportunities for economic growth.
“This big indaba is being held under the theme ‘Revival of the economy through infrastructural development’, which is in line with the country’s economic blue-print cluster on infrastructure and utilities,” Sibanda said.
“Infrastructure is the biggest enabler of economic advancement and this conference will look at opportunities that can be unlocked for economic transformation.”
Sibanda said the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere, his Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment counterpart, Patrick Zhuwao and the Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development, Joseph Made, among others, would attend the meeting.
He said the conference would focus on how to transform the economy, massive housing projects, investment opportunities and funding.
“Massive housing projects create employment not only to the constructors but also the suppliers of the building equipment.
“So if we develop houses there are also down-stream benefits as sellers of furniture will also benefit from households who’ll be in need of furniture,” Sibanda said.
