Ingutsheni nurse goes psycho, bashes nurses at Mpilo hospital

IN a drama-filled incident, a nurse stationed at Ingutsheni Central Hospital lost his marbles and soundly smacked two nurses at Mpilo Central Hospital.

Sources said the male nurse fired rapid verbal barbs at the nurses before unleashing a flurry of karate kicks and wild slaps.

He was incensed at what he called “lazy and slow service.”

Ancestor Matambayashata (45) had taken his wife Monalisa Mushakarere (24) to Mpilo Hospital, last Thursday, as she had allegedly ingested poison.

While they were in the queue waiting to be served, Matambayashata, who was sitting on the bench with his wife, stood up and confronted two nurses-Sithembile Chiwanza (26) and Ashton Atika (26) who were busy serving patients.

“He accused Chiwanza and Atika of delaying in serving them and also delaying in completing paperwork as he fumed that his wife would die as she had taken poison. An argument broke out,” said the source.

Things turned nasty as a rabid Matambayashata charged at the pair.

“He grabbed Chiwanza by her throat and left his palm imprinted on her face with two slaps that echoed through the hospital like gunshots. The big man then reached for a chair and struck Atika on the head injuring him in the left eye,” said the source.

Sensing more harm, another source said, Atika summoned his athletic skills and sprinted into a room with a livid Matambayashata in hot pursuit.

“He ran into Ward 4. He locked himself inside a store room. Matambayashata, who was breathing fire, picked a stone and smashed a window. Matambayashata was restrained by security personnel at the hospital,” said the source.

Pandemonium reigned supreme as patients and hospital staff scrambled to get out of Matambayashata’s warpath.

A witness said Matambayashata looked like he wanted to commit murder.

“I have never been so scared. His name says it all. He has been probably soaking up the pent-up aggression of mental patients where he works and finally released it all today. I thought he would kill someone. Fortunately, he appeared to direct his anger exclusively at the two nurses, who I believe were working swiftly to the best of their ability,” said an out-patient who declined to be named.

The dramatic incident was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Matambayashata.

Bulawayo Police Spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.

“We would like to confirm that we received a case of assault and malicious damage to property that occurred at Mpilo Central Hospital. Investigations are in progress. We would like to urge community members to desist from resorting to violence whenever they are involved in disputes,” he said.

Contacted for a comment, Mpilo Central Hospital Chief Medical Officer DR Narcisius Dzvanga said: “I’m not aware of that incident. May you kindly phone the public relations officer or the clinical director.”

Mpilo Central Hospital Clinical Director Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said: “I can confirm that such an incident occurred at the hospital. Some issues are confidential and I cannot disclose them to the members of the public.”

He added: “We have tightened our security to protect our patients, staff, and the public from any violent act.

“The accused person has since been arrested. Kindly phone the police they will furnish you with more details.”

Efforts to get a comment from Chiwanza and Atika were fruitless.
