WARRIORS striker Thando Ngwenya may have endured an injury-hit and frustrating campaign, but the Zimbabwean forward still finished the season as AmaZulu’s leading goalscorer after finding the net eight times in all competitions in South Africa.
The 23-year-old achieved the feat despite making just 16 appearances for the Durban-based side, with injuries disrupting what had promised to be a breakthrough season.
Ngwenya spent a significant part of the second half of the campaign sidelined after suffering a series of injuries that ruled him out of several crucial matches for AmaZulu.
Before the setback, the former FC Platinum striker had established himself as one of the club’s most influential players, scoring vital goals and inspiring coach Arthur Zwane’s side in a number of key victories.
At one point, Ngwenya ranked among the leading scorers in the South African Premiership, highlighting the fine form he had built before injuries halted his progress.
The injuries also cost him an opportunity to cement his place in the Warriors set-up, with the striker missing potential national team call-ups during his recovery.
Despite the disappointment, Ngwenya remains upbeat and believes he will bounce back stronger next season.
“It was a roller-coaster season with both good and difficult moments. Injuries affected me a lot, but I thank God for the goals and the contribution I managed to make for the club. I also want to thank the technical team led by coach Arthur Zwane and the club management for the support they have given me during my recovery,” he said.
Ngwenya is expected to play a key role in AmaZulu’s plans for the upcoming season as Zwane reportedly prepares to reshape his squad ahead of a new campaign.
The powerful forward’s performances prior to injury offered clear glimpses of his potential, and AmaZulu supporters will be hoping he returns fully fit to build on that promise. – @FungaiMuderere
