Injury grounds Ngezi defender Mavhurume

CARLOS Mavhurume will play no further part in the current season after the Ngezi Platinum Stars defender underwent a delicate knee surgery over the weekend.

The former CAPS United man is expected to fully recover at the end of October when he will be starting light training.

With the season scheduled to end in November, that means Mavhurume will not have sufficient time to prepare himself for any competitive action this term. The 25-year-old suffered the nasty sprain in Ngezi Platinum’s Match-Day five fixture against Manica Diamonds. He has tried to force his way back into the team but each time he has done so the injury has recurred. And late last month, the talented defender who can also play in midfield, had an MRI scan from which the medical experts recommended an operation.

“I am down right now. I have just gone under the knife and I can tell you that the operation was a major success. “I will now be resting until the operation heals. I will be out for some time,” said Mavhurume.

“I am really pained by this setback. I am a professional footballer and all I want to do in my life is play football.

“When I got the injury, I didn’t know the extent and I just thought natural healing would take place. “But each time I tried to play or train, the injury would resurface.

“That’s how medical experts ended up recommending that I should go for a scan.

“So the operation was a success and I should now pray for quick recovery. I know getting injuries is part of the game and I can only hope for the best. I will be back in October or next season”.

Mavhurume was expected to be a key component of the title-chasing Mhondoro outfit.

But after playing just five games either in defence or midfield, the ex-Herentals man was grounded by the knock. Coach Takesure Chiragwi has since then been using three men at the back with mostly Kudzai Chigwida, Gareth Madhake and Leslie Kashitigu the trusted rearguard. They haven’t disappointed as they have been driving the platinum miners with a lot of confidence and conviction. Chiragwi described Mavhurume’s injury as a major blow to his team.

“As a coach, you always have plans for the players you have at your disposal.

“Mavhurume is a key member of my squad and to lose him through injury for the better part of the season doesn’t help matters,” he said.

“We would have loved to have him but then there is nothing we can do. We have to wish him a speedy recovery and play for him as well.

“We have players who have shown that they can fight and it is that spirit that we are encouraging them to carry as the marathon hots up”.

Ngezi Platinum Stars are fighting on two fronts with the ambitious side having an eye at the Chibuku Super Cup and the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title.

They secured a quarter-final place in the Chibuku Super Cup after beating Triangle 2-0 at Baobab in the round of 16 at Baobab last Saturday. The miners are also second on the log with just five points separating them from leaders Highlanders.
